Hello, Dolly!

Greetings, for the first time!

After a couple of years of shadowy existence, Raven’s Jig has finally decided to create a dedicated website. We’re very proud to announce the opening of ravensjig.com, and we’re here to stay. From here on, you will always find us on this domain, and we can always be contacted through this website. Here, we will post updates concerning our musical works, as well as broader information regarding who we are and what we like to do in our spare time.

Right now we do not have much to show here yet, but this is just the beginning… There’s a lot to come! A site’s content should grow gradually, not to bore the reader, nor the content’s writer. In any case, I wouldn’t want to write excuses here!

We hope to see you here again soon for more updates. Power to the Ravens!

Raven’s Jig – Ravens in Paradise

Released in the peaceful days between late spring and early summer, this song was intended to sound as sunny as bright blue skies. Much like someone would rely on classical music or golden oldies to relax, we decided to bring our own, raven-marked lyrics to a classic from 50s musical Kismet, itself inspired by Borodin’s Polovtsian Dance.

Raven’s Jig – Butterflies

Basically Fireflies, but organic… And during the day. The core idea behind this arrange was to replace the spacey keyboard with lyrical strings, the dark blue atmosphere with a bright green one… And why not switch languages as well to give it a more exotic aspect? Butterflies is actually much less about butterflies than it is about tagetes, which are one of Onne’s favorite flowers. This song is an ode to spring and to the immaterial wonders of the natural world.

Raven’s Jig – My Nixie Tube

Nixie tubes are fascinating objects originating from Russia, which are part of Onne’s many interests. So when he decided to make an arrangement of Russian classic Polyushko Polye, he decided that the song would be about Nixie tubes. Agathe didn’t know anything about Nixie tubes though, so she decided to make it a metaphor for a one-sided love towards a person who somehow emanates something, some kind of an impressive light which makes them inaccessible.

Raven’s Jig – Concerning Hobbits

The challenge with this one was straightforward: pay the best homage possible to the introduction scene for the Hobbits in the first Lord Of The Rings film. We tried to make this song sound as “green” and peaceful as possible. The lyrics which we added to this arrangement are also inspired by Bilbo’s narration over the ‘Concerning Hobbits’ scene.

Raven’s Jig – Kraken

If this is not epic Raven’s Jig at its best I don’t know what is. One of our several homages to Hans Zimmer’s amazing soundtracks, this arrange of Kraken is one the darkest, creepiest pieces in our musical history. It would pave the way for later vocal and non-vocal arranges which heavily rely on strong atmosphere.

Raven’s Jig – My Heart will go On

Oh no, not that movie. This is what we thought when we decided to arrange this song. We found it interesting as a melody and wanted to test our skills on it (complete with a return of our beloved children’s choir), but as neither of us is the type of person who cries to movies such as Titanic, we decided to perpetrate the crime of changing the universally-known lyrics, and make this song about childbirth instead. Because we could. And because we found it easier to sing and play about such a theme with emotion.

Raven’s Jig – Winter Night

Going hand in hand with our arrangement of Concerning Hobbits, this vocal arrangement of Lord of the Rings’ Edge of Night, much warmer and with original lyrics, was meant to convey a homely, almost Christmassy kind of peace, possibly evoking the “home” Pippin longed for in the original song.

Raven’s Jig – Scarborough’s Piano

Among our first musical arranges, at the very beginning, was folk classic Scarborough Fair. Once our band was on track, we decided to give it a new try, in a completely different genre – jazz, with smooth synths, improved piano lines and a lower, more mellow tone of voice. We also decided to change the lyrics, giving this version a more absurd, cynical view of the unreasonable wishes of blossoming (or simply one-sided) love.

Raven’s Jig – Imagine (John Lennon cover)

A straightforward classic among classics, and a nice little break for us, arranged with our signature strings and piano to give it the ‘organic’ feel we like to give our calmer music. We didn’t dare to change the iconic lyrics to this masterpiece, but we did add a couple of original lines at the end of the first chorus. Could you spot them?
